Flynn's legacy

"Wherever you are, help is on its way!"
“He was a dreamer, and a visionary... and his dream was to make the outback secure”.
‘Flynn the Dreamer… who saw a vision of a Flying Doctor well before the days of practical flying, but kept it firmly fixed in his mind’, he was a ‘practical man when the time came for action.’
A former Governor General of Australia, Sir William Slim once said of Flynn 'His hands are stretched out like a benediction over the Inland.’
'He had a deep practical concern about the needs of bush people, and the graves in the inland of people who should never have died worried him.'
Flynn always dressed neatly in a suit, but smoked a pipe and drove an old ute. ‘He looked like a bloke from the city but always had the smell of the bush about him’.

'Flynn of the Inland'. http://www.flyingdoctor.org.au/About-Us/Our-History/The-John-Flynn-Story/
When John Flynn began his work to become a minister, he remembered his childhood in the outback where he was raised, which lead him to becoming the founder of the Australian Inland Mission and the Australian Royal Flying Doctor Service.
John Flynn’s work enabled him to experience a range of friendships. His many letters reveal his dry sense of humour and irony, and most importantly, his kind-heartedness. Flynn could easily influence others, and could make one hold their attention to him, but he was also a good listener. He will always be remembered as being one of the greatest Australian heroes of all time.

The definition for a ‘hero’ is: ‘A man of distinguished courage or performance, admired for his noble qualities’. John Flynn definitely fits the requirements for this term, as he took action and saved many lives. His thoughtfulness for the needs and disadvantages for others and determination in making a change towards the better, show that he was a true hero. Not many people considered the
problem for those living in the outback, and certainly none did anything about this, while Flynn established 15 hospitals in Australian rural areas. Flynn never gave up on his ambition on establishing the Australian Royal Doctor Flying Service, and will forever be remembered as being one of the best Australian heroes of his time. The Australian outback community owe much to ‘Flynn of the Inland’, and he will be long remembered by those who have benefited from his incredible work.
The Royal Doctor Flying Service and the Australian Inland Mission, are working testimonials to Flynn’s drive and vision.
John Flynn inspired many people, and continue to inspire. His actions all showed justice and kind-heartedness.
John Flynn once said:
‘A blot on Australia is shown on our frontispiece…There is no call for sensation. Sensation is too cheap. We need action.’
'It is up to us to educate ourselves and mend our ways’.
John Flynn once said ‘A man is his friends’; this expresses the philosophy that ‘all real living is in meeting’.
‘If you start something worthwhile - nothing can stop it.’
'We who so cheerfully sent a cheque for £100,000 to Belgium to help people pushed out of their own inheritance by foreigners-surely we must just as cheerfully do something for those whom we clean-handed people have dispossessed in the interests of superior culture.’
John Flynn is printed on the twenty dollar Australian notes, for his work and for his determination to save many people’s lives.
